FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER
By Jim Geary Board President

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY. What a great day to encourage us to express our love, admiration and respect for people in our lives.  A day in which many children receive candy hearts and cards from schoolmates expressing their friendship.  A day of candlelight dinners, engagements, and expressing tender feelings of devotion. A day of memories for those who have touched us deeply and shared their hearts. However you choose to spend Valentine's Day, consider making part of it reaching out to a dear friend or a fellow club member and let them know that your life is richer because of them. Our time on this earthly plane is short and what better way to celebrate this day than today to open our heart's floodgates and let our love flow.

As many of you know BILL NOLAN has been facing life-threatening cancer for some time.  BILL has continued to play bridge despite his grave prognosis and has done so with grace, humor, and warm smiles.  Hospice is now working with BILL at home and the family would be uplifted by cards.  No calls or visits please.

BILL NOLAN's address is 556 Crooked Stick Dr Daytona Beach, Fl 32114-7190.

50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AND CHAMPAGNE RECEPTION/OPEN HOUSE

Our 50th celebration this year will be on TUESDAY FEBRUARY 28.  It will be an all day affair!  We are very excited that SPIKE LAY has offered to do a lesson suitable for all members from 9:30 to 10:15.   We will have OPEN and LIMITED games beginning at 10:30.  Our OPEN and LIMITED games will continue until 12:30, when we will break to enjoy a catered lunch. Lunch will be catered by Canton Catering. LORI CANTON has a culinary arts degree and will be serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian Italian dishes. Our plates and napkins will reflect our GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY theme. At 1:30 we will reassemble to complete our game, which we estimate will be over by 3 pm.  This will give us an hour to prepare for our CHAMPAGNE RECEPTION which will be between 4-6 pm. We have invited many community and civic leaders to join us for this reception which will include appetizers and Champagne. All members are invited to attend the full day celebration and the Champagne reception.

At the reception we will also be unveiling a quilt to commemorate our 50th anniversary.  The quilt will incorporate panels of local landmarks. MARTHA WIRKUTIS is primarily responsible for our quilt's completion.

Special thanks to CAROL LIVELY who is chair of our GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY celebration and her team: MATIE ELLERY, BETTY SANDIFER, ROGER TAYLOR and MARTHA WIRKUTIS.

JANUARY SECTIONAL

We are pleased to announce that our sectional was a huge success.  We netted over five thousand dollars and thanks to our tournament chair LYNN BROWN and a legion of volunteers everyone had a great time.  Special thanks to SHIRLEY TOWNLEY for organizing members food donations, our setup and cleanup crews, kitchen food preparers and servers, greeters, ticket collectors, and our members who warmly welcomed those from other areas and clubs.

SUZIE HAGEY and SHIRLEY TOWNLEY

SUZIE HAGEY has graciously chaired the FOOD PURCHASING COMMITTEE for many years.  This involves going to SAMS twice a month to purchase supplies.  In her position SUZIE has been frequently called at odd times to do additional purchasing.  SUZIE has decided the time is right for her to step down.  We can't thank SUZIE enough for the tremendous service she has provided to the club. LIBBY WARE will be stepping in as chair of the FOOD PURCHASING COMMITTEE. LIBBY will be assisted by BOB AUMILLER.

SHIRLEY TOWNLEY has also served on the SUNSHINE COMMITTEE for years providing outreach to members that we have not heard from and sending get well cards and sympathy cards to members and their families.   As with SUZIE, we can't thank SHIRLEY enough.  SHIRLEY's warm heart and words have brought comfort to many.  SHIRLEY has decided to step down and BETTY KING has agreed to chair the SUNSHINE COMMITTEE.

NOISE AND COURTESY

We are very grateful for the super attendance we have at our games but the noise level continues to get out of hand at times. When the game director asks us to quiet down please comply. Since we frequently have two sessions it is important we are mindful for the need of quiet and courtesy to other players. Many pairs finish their hands early, before the allotted time, and get up and have noisy conversations while other players are still trying to concentrate. I am asking members to cultivate an attitude of respect for other players and sections that are still playing.  To that end we have the asked the game directors not to announce the results of one section while another section is still playing.  It is also preferable when getting late boards from another table that the game director is asked to retrieve boards. Retrieving boards in the middle of play can be distracting and our game directors are best suited to handle this when necessary.

Also this is a national election year and it is probably best that we don't talk politics at the table. People are sitting on opposite sides of the fence for various and personal reasons. Let's respect that and focus on having a good game.

APRIL EVENING BEGINNING BRIDGE CLASS

LYNN BROWN and JIM GEARY will be offering a class for beginners with an introduction on Two Over One bidding this APRIL. The class will consist of eight sessions and will meet twice weekly on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30. In our past advertizing efforts we have talked with a number of working people who have expressed interest in an evening class.  Also since Two Over One is becoming more popular than Standard American there is movement to introduce beginning players to this style of bidding early on.  The class will begin on Monday April 16 and conclude on Thursday May 10.  This first class will be free with subsequent classes costing five dollars. In addition to bringing in new players we are also inviting current members who are beginners who feel they would benefit by a refresher and an introduction to Two Over One bidding.  If interested please call Lynn at (386) 405-0547

MENTOR GAME

On Friday February 17 at 9:15 we will have another mentor game. We are delighted that we have over sixty members being mentored. This is a great program and we are extremely grateful to JUDY HINDS for developing this.
